Why Social Media Marketing is Like Brushing your Teeth
I’ve been a marketing consultant for over a decade and, knock on wood, I have never been at a loss for rewarding work, even though I didn’t advertise; I didn’t blog for my business and I didn’t update my website more than once every few years. I know…Shame on me, right?
My excuse for not investing in me was that I was spending all my time investing in the success of my clients. I spent so much time marketing on their behalf that I never seemed to have any time left for my own business.
So how did I maintain a steady stream of clients? Surprisingly it was through my personal network on social media (Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn), where I like to engage with people and businesses who share my passion for golf. Social media opened a whole new market for my business without me ever using it to “market” On-Mark-IT.
If you want your business to succeed, you need to treat social media management like brushing your teeth. You have to do it multiple times a day or your brand, like your teeth, will rot.”
Now don’t panic! Multiple times a day doesn’t mean multiple hours a day. It will take a few hours to initially set up your accounts/pages on social networks, but after that it doesn’t have to take a ton of your time.
I like to recommend an hour a day to really engage with target audiences, but even with just ½ hour a day, you’d be amazed at the results.
But don’t just take my word for it…
According to one of the industry’s leading Inbound Marketing software companies, HubSpot
- Businesses with only 51-100 followers on Twitter generate 106% more traffic to their websites, apps and online stores than those with 25 or less!
- 3 out of 5 Small to Medium Enterprises (SME) gain new customers as a result of their social media efforts.
Social Media Examiner (one of my favorite sites) reported that companies that invest 6+ hours a week on social media marketing can expect to see lead generation increase by 65% and website traffic increase by 78%.
So… do you still believe you can’t afford even 30-60 minutes spread over your day to help grow your business? You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to be good at social media. You just need to be as committed to it as you are to your dental hygiene, and practice time-saving “tricks of the trade”.
To help you, I’ll be posting tips, tricks and best practices on how to execute a successful social media campaign for a small business on my blog.
